Why is spring so cold
We expect the summer to be normal to warm, but this is just an increased chance given the information we now have based on the current conditions and forecast — any one prediction can of course still be wrong.
After all, often nothing is as unpredictable as the weather. Portsmouth Climate Festival — Portsmouth, Portsmouth. Edition: Available editions United Kingdom. Become an author Sign up as a reader Sign in. Niko Wanders , Utrecht University. So will it get any better or is the summer of doomed?
Climate change Weather Weather forecasting Seasons. During May , most of Europe experienced slightly below-average temperatures. March was milder than usual over northwestern Europe, colder than the — average over southeastern and far eastern Europe, and close to average over the southwest of the continent. April temperatures were below average across an area sweeping from Iceland to the Mediterranean and Black Seas, with — for example — Germany seeing its coldest April in 40 years , but above average over the west of the Iberian Peninsula and over the far east of the continent.
The month began with unusually mild conditions in many places, but temperatures plummeted over an extensive region during the first week, reaching record lows over parts of western and central Europe, for example over Slovenia.
As for May, Germany experienced its coldest since and maximum temperatures for the first three weeks of May in the United Kingdom were some of the lowest on record. There were, however, above-average temperatures in eastern Europe and in southern Spain, Greece, Turkey, and western Norway. Despite Europe itself being colder than average, the parts of the globe surrounding the continent were much warmer than the — average, especially in April and May.
The Atlantic Ocean, North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Russia all saw high temperatures, with records broken in many locations. Areas surrounding Europe saw large variations in temperature from month to month, especially northern Russia.
Surface temperature anomalies are often directly influenced by large-scale wind patterns, which are themselves linked to the distribution of areas of low and high atmospheric pressure. The warm colours of tan and brown are protruding north towards Greenland.
As long as this stays in place we will continue to experience below normal temperatures. So, when will this change? That is a very good question. In order for us to get back into a normal flow something need to knock this warm air in the North Atlantic out of the way. It appears that a couple strong low-pressure systems move through the North Atlantic later this week and early next week.
They should be strong enough to knock this warm air lose and change the pattern over North America. Figure 2 shows the upper-level wind pattern over the Prairies for April 10, Notice that the flow is completely from the Northwest. Northwest flows come from the Arctic and bring cold air into the prairies. This will change, as the wind pattern changes by the end of April. They are becoming far more aware and concerned. Thanks Chris! Also I give a lot of tours of the Nash Prairie and this is the kind of explantion that is most helpful for those who are new to exploring outdoor environments, which there are many.
Susan Conaty. Every day I drive to work I observe the conditions of the Mississippi River Refuge and how the swings in our weather are affecting it. We are in the middle of migration birds are showing up in the rookeries and there is still 24 inches of ice in most of the backwaters here in Winona county and North.
Last year we were picking asparagus this year I am still skiing. It is my hope that we are able to at minimum slow down the process that this civilization has brought about through underestimating the effect it has on the planet we depend on.
Thank you for a good article. Great job, Chris. With credit to you, I would like to use some, maybe all, of this in my next section in the Missouri Prairie Journal. Garry Winters Thanks for the explanation.
I believe climate change is defiantly a more appropriate name for what is happening with our weather. I live Manitoba Canada and still have 2 feet of snow in my front yard. Night time temp close to minus 20 c or 0 f. Weird or What. This whole article is total balogney.
There is NO scientific fact backing up your claims. The Earth is really in a cooling period, just starting. How convenient. No matter the weather cold, hot, warm, cool, wet, dry or even normal can be blamed on man-caused global warming. Sorry folks. Mitch, As a true skeptic, I am interested if you have any evidence that that you base your claims Last year actually was warmer in the Spring due to more solar flare activity, noting solar activity?
