Are there children in antarctica
With many governments maintaining permanent manned research facilities here, there is a small but not very stable population between 1, and 5,, depending on the season. This means Antarctica has a population density of just 0. The first real semi-permanent residents of the area around Antarctica were sealers from Britain and America who used to spent at least a year in the area from onward. During the great whaling era until , the population of the area was 1, to 2, during the summer, and during the winter.
The first child born in the region was a Norwegian girl born in Grytviken in , and she was the daughter of an assistant manager at a whaling station. Emilio Marcos Palma was the first person born south of the 60th parallel south, which is the continental limit. He was also the first person born on the mainland of Antarctica and his birth occurred in at Base Esperanza, as his parents were sent to the area by the Argentine government to see if the area could sustain family life. Thanks a lot for all information. He also wrote about the queeste of Scott and his four companions to reach the exact pole and the disaster that happened just before their return to the basis station. He tried to travel with ponies but the only thing they were good for, was to be consumed. For the ponies the journey was too difficult and they were of no help to pull the sledges. Must read it again I think.
I dreamed of participating on an expedition too, knowing that luckily it would never happen. These people are mainly based there for one year to live and work in the research stations. The research stations are scattered all around the continent. The Antarctic Treaty which came into force in is now signed by 53 countries. The treaty regulates the international relations between all countries to support scientific operations on the ice. Article 1 of the Antarctic Treaty states that 'The area is to be used for peaceful purposes only'.
According to the Antarctic Treaty, Antarctica refers to the land and ice shelves from 60 degrees south of the equator. There are 18 countries who regularly send scientists and researchers to the various stations on the continent. The largest research station is McMurdo station, which is an research centre.
There more than 1, scientists work on various research projects during summertime.
