What will london olympic stadium be used for

Mark Craine. Megan Ashfield. Marc Spinner. Paul Goodall. Bianca Binder. How did we get here? How long have you got? The story begins in when Lord Rogers wrote to Tony Blair suggesting a stadium in Stratford built for football with interim use for athletics as the centrepiece of any Olympics bid, to be funded by joint tenancy between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

The Water City scheme foundered over land issues. Tentative talks with football clubs, including West Ham, had proved inconclusive. As such, at a fateful meeting of the Olympic board in February , it was decided to press on with building an athletics stadium that could easily be become a community facility with a 25,seat capacity but was harder to convert to a football stadium.

In effect, discussions over the future use of the stadium were parked. With Boris Johnson, and his love of eye-catching projects, replacing Ken Livingstone in and the coalition government coming to power in the idea of finding a solution that would enable the stadium to be retained as a larger, dual-use facility gained popularity. In order to make the finances work, a Premier League football club was considered a prerequisite.

The Olympic Stadium has been officially opened and here are some facts and figures about one of London's most modern constructions. The Games were meant to take place in Rome but London offered to step in after the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in Its predecessor was quite the multi-sport facility - a running track, enclosed within a cycling track, and diving and swimming pools built into the central field.

The track finishing line is commemorated in the pavement outside. The London stadium seats 80, people during Games time but architects Populous designed it with legacy in mind, as capacity will be reduced after the Games. The lower tier, which holds 25, people, is permanent, but the upper tier is temporary and its concrete and steel structure holding 55, seats can be dismantled.

The formal bidding process to use the stadium after the Olympics and Paralympics began in August , with a decision due to be announced in May But the tendering process has been dogged by problems including controversy over future use, objections from rival bidders and a complaint to the European Commission.

The roof over the stadium is not made of steel or concrete but of PVC. It is designed to keep costs and some of the environmental impact down on a key part of the structure that is due to be dismantled.

Other "green" features include using lightweight steel in the construction and rainwater collection. The black and white design picked out in the stadium's seating is based on the jagged shards that feature in the design of the London graphics and logo and also seen on the reverse of the medals. The lines are angled to shoot out from one area, the m finishing line on the track, to represent the point from which energy radiates. Another 56 colours feature within the stadium's structure and are based on the bright colours of the Games branding.

They form a "colour wheel" in shades of pink, blue, green and orange that change throughout the stadium as they are picked out in paintwork, glass around the stairs and the fabric wrap on the outside. The London Marathon Community Track opened in , and features a floodlit six-lane m athletics track and field event space; a full-sized football pitch; covered spectator stands; changing rooms and a clubroom.

As well as providing warm up tracks and event space for major sporting events at London Stadium, it also open to local residents and the wider community. It is also runs open public sessions throughout the week. Find out more information, including session times and prices below. For architects Populous, the challenge was to build a venue for 80, spectators to watch Olympic and Paralympic events that could easily be adapted for use following the Games.

The venue was officially opened on 6 May by nine year old Niamh Clarke-Willis at the 2, hours to go until the official opening ceremony. During the Games it was the home of athletics for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
